MARINE BOOT CAMP HAIKU - Ty Hadman

A presentation of Ty Hadman's work as part of the haikumania War Crimes Project we present "Marine Boot Camp Haiku". This piece gives us a real feeling of the often brutal Boot Camp culture that even now prevails in armies around  the world. - Paul Conneally

MARINE BOOT CAMP HAIKU

Ty Hadman

     Taking the oath;
     "I promise to serve GOD
     and my country."

     standing on a set
     of yellow painted footprints
     there’s no turning back

These footprints were to indicate where the new draftees and recruits had to stand in line while
waiting to get our heads shaved.

     our hair is gone
     in a matter of minutes
     we look like pathetic monks

on a bus to the barracks
no one is allowed to speak
     a single word

     second week of training
     the damn D.I. nicknames me
     "Scarecrow!"

     D.I. stands for Drill Instructor.

     an exhausting day
     the man beaten up badly
     stifles sobs after taps

Taps refers to the time of rest, after "lights out!" Sometimes a sad bugle is played.

     lights on at 4 a.m.
the last man out of bed
gets a boot in the butt

     chow hall
     four minutes
     for breakfast

A chow hall is a military cafeteria.

     120 men
take a piss in 42 seconds
     "two seconds too slow ladies!"

     standing at attention
hour after hour in the heat
     no one moves an inch

     today we were allowed
     to smoke just one cigarette
     everyone is miserable

     daytime
     worse than the worst
     nightmare

     parade grounds
     our heels thundering in unison
     music to the D.I.’s ears

The parade grounds is the place where military marches and inspections are held.

     pugil stick drill:

Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill!

     Kill! Kill! Kill!

Pugil sticks are used in training men to fight with a bayonet attached to the front end of a rifle in
     hand-to-hand combat.

     climbing up the rope
by the time I reach the top
     my penis is hard

     twice today I was called
     a slimy dick cock sucking
     son-of-a-bitch of a bastard!

     standing guard duty
     the D.I. hiding inside
     the dipsty-dumpster

     the D.I. just waiting
for me to make a mistake
     his sadistic eyes

     "Scarecrow! Stand up
     with your arms straight out
until I say you can move"

     have an upset stomach,
complain, get punched in the gut,
     then puke my guts out

fourth week on the rifle range
     I ain’t gettin’ Maggie’s drawers
     no more

Maggie’s drawers is the name of the flag that is waved when the marksman completely
     misses the target.

     qualifying with the M-14
     my eye and the bull’s-eye
     become one

The M-14 is a military rifle. The M-16 was mostly used in Vietnam, but a few soldiers
preferred the heavier, but more accurate M-14.

     Final Inspection:
the fly on my nose refuses
     to leave me alone

     Graduation Day:
for the very first time the D.I.
     calls us Marines

Three Jars Of Coal Dust Jelly - Paul Conneally 2011

The work is at at Snibston Discovery Museum - a former colliery near Coalville.

Three Jars Of Coal Dust Jelly comes out of Conneally's commission 'Spoil Heap Harvest' as cultural forager for Transform Snibston funded by the Arts Council and Leicestershire Museums Service.

The jars are in a specially constructed museum cabinet. During the Revealing Snibston Exhibition at Snibston Conneally also installed ART JAM where identical jars of Coal Dust Jelly were for sale. The left hand side of the counter jars were labelled ART and the right hand jars were labelled JAM. The only difference was the price. The jars from the ART side cost a shed load more than the jars from the Jam side.

Snibston has many 'real' objects on display.

Do 'real' objects remain the same when placed in a museum or gallery? Do 'unreal' objects become 'real' when placed in a museum alongside 'real' ones?

The Transform Snibston William Wordsworth Trail

View Transform Snibston William Wordsworth Trail in a larger map

The Transform Snibston William Wordsworth Trail starts from Snibston Discovery Museum, Coalville, Leicestershire, and visits places associated with William Wordsworth from the time when he and his family lived nearby at Coleorton in 1806 / 1807. As well as living in the area for around a year Wordsworth also visited the area many many times to see his friend Sir George Beaumont and visit his son John when he was parson at Whitwick. The Transform Snibston William Wordsworth Trail was conceived and created by cultural forager and artist Paul Conneally for Transform Snibston 2011.

Art Jam - Paul Conneally 2011

Art Jam - Paul Conneally invites visitors to the opening of Transform Snibston to purchase one of his jars of Coal Dust Jelly. Shoppers can choose to either buy a jar as jam or as a work of art. All the jars are identical. If they choose to buy one as art it will cost them more money than if they choose to buy it as jam. Conneally does not mind what they choose to do.

The Transform Snibston exhibition 'Revealing Snibston' opens on May 14 in the Century Theatre, Snibston Discovery Museum, Coalville.

Established in 1992 following closure of the Colliery, Snibston Discovery Museum is the showcase for Leicestershire’s historic science, technology, design and fashion collections. Exploring the changing technological world in which we live, through exhibitions, events and our learning programmes, you can find out more about major technological changes which have affected our everyday lives.

Snibston is dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of Leicestershire

Also on exhibit is Conneally's 'Three Jars Of Coal Dust Jelly' :

Mick Smith and William Wordsworth

MICK_SMITH_and_WILLIAM_WORDSWORTH.wmv Watch on Posterous
Mick Smith, window cleaner and former Snibston colliery worker, reads an excerpt from a William Wordsworth poem written during his time living at Coleorton, North West Leicestershire, just down the road from Snibston. The poem refers to and is inspired by Grace Dieu Priory where Wordsworth used to visit regularly with his family. Grace Diieu Priory is on the Transform Snibston William Wordsworth Trail.

The video and trail are part of poet artist and cultural forager, Paul Conneally's work Spoil Heap Harvest for Transform Snibston.

Here is the Wordsworth poem in full:

FOR A SEAT IN THE GROVES OF COLEORTON.

BENEATH yon eastern ridge, the craggy bound,
Rugged and high, of Charnwood's forest ground
Stand yet, but, Stranger! hidden from thy view,
          The ivied Ruins of forlorn GRACE DIEU;
Erst a religious House, which day and night
With hymns resounded, and the chanted rite:
And when those rites had ceased, the Spot gave birth
To honourable Men of various worth:
There, on the margin of a streamlet wild,
          Did Francis Beaumont sport, an eager child;
There, under shadow of the neighbouring rocks,
          Sang youthful tales of shepherds and their flocks;
          Unconscious prelude to heroic themes,
          Heart-breaking tears, and melancholy dreams
Of slighted love, and scorn, and jealous rage,
With which his genius shook the buskined stage.
Communities are lost, and Empires die,
          And things of holy use unhallowed lie;
They perish;--but the Intellect can raise, From airy words alone, a Pile that ne'er decays.                                                    William Wordsworth

Channelling Wordsworth

Currently 'cultural forager' with Transform Snibston poet artist Paul Conneally is once again channelling William Wordsworth to mediate between himself, community and place in North West Leicestershire. A major part of his ongoing work 'Spoil Heap Harvest' is the making of the Snibston Wordsworth Trail.

William Wordsworth and his family lived at Coleorton Hall Farm for nearly a year between 1806 and 1807. The trail will start at Snibston and take in many of the places associated with Wordsworth and his friends and family including Coleridge, Sir George Beaumont and Dorothy Wordsworth.

Conneally uses historical poetic and artistic material foraged from the area to make links between the past, now and what might be. On the 14th of May 2011 another of the 4 artists currently working with Transform Snibston, Geof Broadway, will be installing a digital artwork illumination in the Century Theatre on the main Snibston site. Conneally along with Brendan Jackson and Jo Dacombe will also be exhibiting tasters of their own work at the event.

Below is a poem from a previous channelling of Wordsworth by Conneally:

JOANNA ROCKS

no time for streams
or those that look at hills
you learn to love
passing your early youth
amid the smoke of cities

lofty firs
taller than the old steeple
village news

the vicar's collar
a house big enough
for ten rough sleepers

autumn shadows
spray-painted on a boulder
by the rail-track
in huge red lettering
'Joanna Rocks

LIAR Eccentric City May 2009 LIAR - Look I Am Reading - Paul Conneally - Extract from Eccentric City May 2009

In LIAR Conneally explores cities through reading in public places.

Silent reading as psychogeographic intervention.

Originally performed in Avignon as part of the Avignon Festival 2008 Conneally has gone on to read silently in many other locations exploring the line between where it's acceptable to read silently in public and where its not. What are the messages given out when someone decides to read to themself in a paticular place - home tube cafe shopping mall busy street sat down stood uo top of a hill in a stream?

'So Many Stars' - A Starburst Hybrengay - Tanebata 2000

Somanystars

* read the rays from center outward; 'rays' may be also read separately below the starburst graphic

STARBURST HYBRENGAY Template and Instructions

Rengay is a themed, 6 stanza linked haiku invented by Garry Gay, the stanzas alternating 3-2-3-3-2-3 for 2 players and 3/2/3/2/3/2 for 3 players.

The "starburst" hybrengay (hybrid-rengay) invented by Debra Woolard Bender, is a new-form hybrid inspired by rengay. In this form, a central "nodal" hokku provides a general theme and acts as the 1st stanza for 5 or more linked haiku branches. Each team of 2 collaborates privately to follow a theme inspired by the nodal hokku.

Starburst Rays = 5 teams of 2 players each. (N = nodal hokku) N/3-B/2-A/3-B/3-A/2-B/3: all teams follow the same pattern, issuing from the nodal hokku which is selected by a chance drawing:

Each player submits a 3 line hokku to the "renga master". As hokku arrive, a number from 1-10 is assigned to each one by the renga master. When they have been received, the renga master asks a random participant to choose a number between 1-10. The hokku with the winning number will be the first stanza and inspiration for each hybrengay "ray". Each team works independently without seeing the rays of the other teams until the works are completed and submitted to the renga master for compilation and sharing. The rays may be arranged graphically as a visual starburst (see above).

6 or mor teams is a possibility, although it would be difficult to produce a computer graphic which could be viewed online, due to screen-space limitations.

Rainfall - 7HQ - Groovefinder Full Mix

When Paul Conneally and Richard Sampson first wrote and recorded 'Rainfall' as 'Talking Bout The Sunshine' with Iguana Brothers in around 1988 it was sax driven piece with echos of the Sweeny theme tune somehow running through it. It resurfaces some years later as 'Rainfall' by 7HQ on the SuSu label. It came only as a 12" disc with three house driven mixes still featuuring the sublime vocals of Richard Sampson. This is the full Groovefinder mix.

Below is the original Iguana Brothers rough mix recording from 1988 followed by a video of The Sweeney titles and theme tune.
