Overview

Groups of four to five people formed organically through interest and some at random. Each group was given a pre-prepared raised bed and asked to plant a political systems – existing, past or a new system. After an hour of debate and some regrouping, six garden plots were planted.

Landescapism

By Hillary, Alessandro and John

Post-Communism is a name sometimes given to the period of political and economic transformation or “transition” in former Communist states located in parts of Europe and Asia, in which new governments aimed to create free market-oriented capitalist economies with some form of parliamentary democracy.

Planting Plan

We started with a crowded, degraded bit of land (system). Some plants escape by knocking down the walls of oppression and heading for what they hope will be greener pastures, towards a new system.

Plants:

Brassicas: co-opted regime beneficiaries, lacking imagination

Radicchio: formerly oppressed workers

Sweetcorn: sweet talkers, politicians and bureaucrats

Nasturtium: formerly oppressed students

Fennel: heroic citizen spearheading the revolution

Lavender: promised land, beckoning them from a distance

Soil Assembly

By Rebecca Beinart and Alice Gale-Feeny

Anarchy is a political philosophy which considers the state undesirable, unnecessary and harmful, and instead promotes a stateless society (without the implications of disorder).

Key to soils:

1. Garden of Remembrance

2. Admin director’s office

3. Wild area at car park

4. Corner of Cricket field

5. Innovation centre

6. Manure pile by Bowling green

7. Dumped clay from test ground

8. Fountain water

9. Business and economics

Planting Plan

An anarchic garden is not managed or gardened, it is left to its own devices and flowers and weeds are left to grow.

Soil samples are collected from different locations of the campus and arranged in a grid within one plot. The soils are left as found without any extra watering or other support, so that plants would sprout by chance and their own rules.

Plants: any that will settle and grow.

Territorial Dispute

By Daniel Bower and Heather Knight

Imperialism:

The creation and maintenance of an unequal economic, cultural and territorial relationship, usually between states and often in the form of an empire, based on domination and subordination. Imperialism has been described as a primarily western concept that employs expansionist – mercantilist and latterly communist – systems. The term imperialism should not be confused with ‘colonialism’ as it often is. Edward Said suggests that imperialism involved “the practice, the theory and the attitudes of a dominating metropolitan centre ruling a distant territory’”. He goes on to say colonialism refers to the “implanting of settlements on a distant territory”.

Planting Plan

This plot symbolises the conflicts raised by access to resources and the resulting forms of invasion and global vs local dispute.

Imported soil and plants are creating the basis of this plot. The highly aggressive spreaders might leap over and conquer the neighbouring plots, particularly the Soil Assembly system as a corridor connects the two. Foxglove forms the head of state, while grasses function as rampant invaders. Also strawberries and spider plants help increase populations, spreading to nearby plots. Climbing beans take over higher levels of air space.

Mt. Archy

By Ruth and Graham

Monarchy is a form of government in which all political power is absolutely or nominally lodged with an individual. As a political entity, the monarch is the head of state, generally until their death or abdication, and “is wholly set apart from all other members of the state.

Planting Plan:

A spiral with purple colored chives and sage at the top represent royal rulers. Other small plants like thyme have a hard time overcoming the long spiral path to reach the top. The ladies mantle brings in gender issues at the base of the spiral. Climbing beans bridge over to the top, eventually overgrowing everything.

However, Mt. Archy soon was conquered by black flies, annihilating the system.

Marigold Alliance

By Stephen Laws and Paul Conneally

Health and Efficiency

An open relationship between the functional edible and ornamental.

Planting Plan:

Trailing beans, strawberries, fennel, purple sage, thyme, poppies, oregano, sunflowers, lavender and day lillies.

Feudalism

By Richard Jones

Feudalism is a political and military system between a feudal aristocracy (a lord), and his vassals. In its most classic sense, feudalism refers to the Medieval European political system composed of a set of reciprocal legal and military obligations among the warrior nobility, revolving around the three key concepts of lords, vassals, and fiefs.

Planting Plan:

In this scheme manure both binds – the circle – and dominates – the shaft. The power of kings, the basis of the western medieval economiy is all founded on manure.

Key to Design

1. Outer circle = three orders of 1. medieval society, reciprocity and duties of care

2. Helix – great chain of being an 2. unbroken chain from the least significant to the greatest

3 The ropes – forming the 3. pyramid representing feudal hierarchy and inequalty. Elite plants: ginger, figs/ raisins, clove, peopper, saffron, cinnamon, mace Plants: ideally wheat, barley and oats. For the plot climbing beans were used.

Scholarship

By Raffaella, Pawas, Daniel, John and family

The scholarship garden bed takes the shape of a ship. In the formative years at a university scholars not only grow their knowledge but also as a person. Hopefully at the end of their tenure at university they will have grown enough to tackle the stormy waters of the larger world, safely sailing into their future.

Planting Plan:

1. Plant any kind of edible food that grows in local climate.
2. Water and hold readings to plants and people regularly, such as novels by Jules Verne, discourses by Slavoj Žižek and poems by Percy Bysshe Shelley.
3. Harvest and spread fruit.

Three Feet Connected

"Two human feet found about 20 miles apart on the banks of a river in Cleethorpes have been identified and one has been linked to a third foot found in Holland, police have said." - Ilkeston Advertiser

When I first read, this all my suspicions about the Lincolnshire population out of stories around how clubbed feet and the like were common due to the intense closeness of family relationships through intermarriage, seemed to be coming true.

Could it be that some hit man has killed a three footed Lincolnshire yellow belly and disposed of its severed feet in locations around Lincolnshire and the Netherlands?

Never mind the search for Yeti and Bigfoot it's the Lincolnshire Three Foot that we should be out finding money for to fund scientific explorations of the fens in an attempt to perhaps capture one of the fifteen toed beasts.

Two feet found twenty miles apart and a third related foot found in that other low country Holland or as perhaps more appropriately called, The Netherlands.

Clearly three feet belonging perhaps to the same person is unusual but Lincolnshire Police are investigating a fourth foot, this time found in the River Humber "not far from the Humber Bridge" but say that this fourth foot is "unconnected" to the other three. Well it was certainly not connected to anything much else either being found as it was in a brown boot near Barton-on-Humber minus its owner.

Lincolnshire, the land of severed feet, one wonders how many more feet, booted or not might turn up on Cleethorpes beach or in the dykes and ditches that criss cross this low flat land.

The Ilkeston Advertiser tells us that no inquest has been called as:

"the finding of a foot is not enough to prove there has been a death"

Others might think it's to stop the existence of the Lincolnshire Three Foot being once and for all proved true.

Spoil Heap Harvest

Spoil Heap Harvest - 2010

Spoil Heap Harvest is a series of 12 images made by Paul Conneally of a walk over the spoil heap from Snibston Colliery, Coalville, Leicestershire.

The spoil heap is now Snibston Country Park and is situated directly adjacent to Snibston Discovery Park.

The walk was led by social geographer and artist Maurice Maguire.

The walkers were artists Jo Dacombe, Geoff Broadway, Brendan Jackson and Paul Conneally.

Conneally is looking for ways other than photography to document walks and interventions. Here he picks berries, leaves, flowers and animals droppings along the way and smears them directly into his sketch book.

The images here are 'in the raw'.

The work comes out of action reserach for TRANSFORM an exploration of Snibston Discovery Park and beyond for Leicestershire Museums Service.

SPECIAL! - Video Instalation City Of London Guildhall 2006

Special! - Video Instalation City of London Guildhall 2006

Video installation for City of London Festival 2006 by Paul Conneally (Little Onion) with pupils in Tower Hamlets, London UK.

The piece was originally installed on a loop in the City of London Guildhall.

The art of suprising comparison is explored with pupils placing haiku written in the built environment of school grounds next to special objects brought in from home. The psychogeographical element that runs through Conneally's work work is found in the encouragement to engage differently with familliar built suroundings in new ways.

A further element of detournement is found in the justoposition of the soundtrack from the Japanese monster film Mothra about a giant moth that protects two tiny princesses and the world from environmental catastrophe.

Soundtrack is Mothra's Song by The Peanuts.

Intervention renga with Watermead Estate community Thurmaston, Leicestershire.
Co-ordinated by artist Jemma Bagley for Charnwood Arts
Music: Judge Smut Dub by Dum Dum Dum 1979
Paul Conneally and Jemma Bagley return to Thurmaston revisiting the site that originally led to "The Sound Of Water" a psychogeographic / splacist exploration of Thurmaston, in the Borough of Charnwood, Leicestershire through a series of haiku walks, workshops and interventions with people that live and / or work in the area.
The Sound of Water was a piece of public art originally coming out of a Section 106 planning requirement for public art as part of the development of the old Merrimans site next to the A46 in Thurmaston into the new 'Watermead' housing estate. Conneally and Bagley were commissioned through Charnwood arts via Charnwood Borough Council to work with "community groups" to produce haiku like texts that could be incorporated into metal works of art by Richard Thornton in the new housing development.
Conneally and Bagley decided to approach the Thurmaston Action Group, that was actively campaigning against the 'Watermead' development, rather than just go straight into a school (which they did later) or such to generate textual material. The developers were not told that the group working with the artists to put texts into the new site were actively opposed to and campainging against the development. Approached by the BBC to talk about the project Conneally felt he would get a better understanding of what he was actually doing by asking one of the action group to speak, alongside Bagley, instead of himself and the interview itself became part of the piece: Sound of Water Interview

Fajitas In A Teepee sees the artists returning to the now complete new development and working with the new residents during an afternoon that was intended to bring the new community together. Fajitas In A Teepee is an "intervention renga" - non of the praticipants set out to write a renga - they were randomly approached by Conneally (Little Onion) in roving renga master mode to link with and shift away from the previously written verse as the renga built up on recycled cardboard around the playground in the centre of the estate. The artists took time to engage with and discuss resident and workers feelings about living and working in and around the new Watermead development including how the design and build elements affected their mood and style of living.
The video of the boards that were written in situ and attached to the wooden fence around the playground are not the finished piece. The piece was and is the interactions in and with the space and the people on the day.
We exchange places with spaces and in doing so both are changed.

Haiku Seats Watermead Estate Thurmaston

Haiku fragments built into the urban landscape via metal benches designed and made by Richard Thornton with metal cut text out of splacist / psychogeographic haiku walks by Paul Conneally through Thurmaston and surrounds with local people.

The seats / benches are now installed in the centre of the new build mix of social and non-social housing in the community playground and social area.

The haiku walks and work directly with the community was co-ordinated by artist Jemma Bagley through Charnwood Arts.

Bus Stop (featuring Late Of The Pier)

Bus Stop - Paul Conneally 2008

While watching 'Late of The Pier' at FOPP, Nottingham, Paul Conneally turns his attention away from the band, which he can hear but not see too well, to the people he can see through the window from inside the gig at FOPP on Queen Street, boarding a bus.

The band are clearly audible on the street. The queue becomes interesting in juxtaposition to the music.

Most of the people do not seem to want to be seen to notice the very loud live music coming from the store as LOTP provide the soundtrack to their bus boarding at the end of a busy day at work.

Here the spectacle being provided specifically for entertainment is replaced by the spectacle of the street itself.

One woman in particular, as she struggles with her umbrella, captivates us.

The video was later installed in the actual window videoed from and played on a loop for 24 hours. The main audience was people waiting for the bus at the bus stop videoed and passers by.

Shopputting Reported at Culture 24

Artist places free clothes in shops as part of his "shopputting" project

Artist Paul Conneally has designed special labels for his shopputting anitcs. © the artist

Shoppers browsing the shelves in chain-stores across the Midlands have been getting more than they bargained for, as they discover items left by an artist who says he is “shopputting” – the opposite of shoplifting.

Loughborough-based Paul Conneally has been placing clothes, shoes and other goods with labels attached to them informing the customer that they aren’t for sale, but can simply be taken.

He has been stopped by security four times and police have been called twice during the latest stage of his project, which has taken him to Topshop stores across the region. But after explaining that it is not against the law to place goods in a shop without permission, the artist has been let off each time.

Writing on his Blog (http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/581091) on the Artists Newsletter website, Conneally explained that shopputting is "another word for giving".

He also gave an example of a happy customer in Derby: "One teenager stopped as she took a pair of Shopputted labelled tracky bottoms out of the shop - she appeared to show the security man the label and he chatted on his radio and sent her on her way - both were laughing - that's good - hope they fit her."

Conneally's Topshop project will continue until the end of November 2009.

Organo Compost Centre No.1

Organo Compost Centre No.1

Organo Compost Centre
paul conneally 2010

Organo Compost Centre is an ecosplacist image made from a pencil rubbing taken at a SITA recycling plant at Lount, Leicestershire,UK.

Conneally visited the site on a coach trip with Amy Franceschini and Myriel Milicevic as part of their 'Beneath The Pavement A Garden' piece for Loughborough University RADAR.

They were told that as a security measure they could not take photographs at the site.

The site receives all the garden waste collected from the kerbside by Leicestershire County Council including Charnwood where Conneally lives and so he was effectively stopped from photographing his own garden waste as it was stored and transformed into 'Organo Compost' which is then sold on to farms and domestic gardeners.

Conneally decided instead to make a series of pencil rubbings of operational machinary on site not knowing if this broke the rule that 'no images are to be taken of the operational site' or not.

Leicestershir County Council state about operations on the site:

"The composting process is entirely natural. No chemicals are added at any time, and the process is similar, but on a much larger scale, to that of home compost heaps. When green waste is delivered from the Recycling and Household Waste Sites, it is checked, and any contaminants such as paper and plastic bags that have accidentally got into the container are removed. This is a labour intensive job, which is why it is important to ensure that only the correct materials are put into the container in the first place.

Machines are used to shred the green waste and it is then formed into large triangular shaped heaps, approximately 3 metres high, called windrows. The windrows are turned each week to keep them aerobic, this gives air to the microbes (friendly bugs) that break down the green waste.
After about 16 weeks the compost is ready. The compost is screened to remove any bits of material that are too big and the finished product is sold to a variety of customers."

A distubing element at the site is a machine that blows artificial 'cherry flavoured' odours out into the fresh Leicestershire air to mask the smell of the decomposing garden waste as it turns into compost. Organic?

Towards A Splacist Manifesto On The Use Of PowerPoint Presentations

Paul Conneally spoke briefly with psychologist and one of the original developers of the psychic profiling of perpetrators of crime, David Canter, after his talk in the quad at RADAR Loughborough last year.

David's talk given in an outdoor space rather than in a lecture theatre or hall was illustrated not with a PowerPoint but by a live string quartet playing sections from a piece composed by David himself that brought a different dimension to his words.

This led Conneally to think a little and make moves towards a splacist manifesto on the use of PowerPoint slide shows:

We encourage all university lecturers, school teachers, business people and others to consign the PowerPoint presentation as most commonly currently used to the trash bin.

The only times these p(e)rveyors of usually seconhand thought should use PowerPoint presentations are when they use a previously unseen randomly downloaded PowerPoint slide show to illustrate whatever it is that they wish to pontificate on to their captive audience.

Students and other audience members should boo any speaker using a PowerPoint made by the speaker themselves or one that though not made by the speaker has been obviously rehearsed to by the speaker before hand.

The use of dance, music, boxing or any other performative act is actively encouraged in place of PowerPoint presentations.

Invigilator Malvern - Nikki Pugh GPS Trace

Paul Conneally and Nikki Pugh's INVIGILATOR:MALVERN saw the two artists stand back to back outside Malvern Train Station and set off on the codified left, rights and straight ons common to all the INVIGILATOR series. This time they were accompanied by Nathaniel Pitt (walking with Conneally) and Jean Baynham (walking with Pugh).

Conneally and Pugh each held a GPS device that logged their positions relative to each other as they explored Malvern using the Invigilator walk to work instructions.

Back in her technosplacist lab Pugh used the cross-referenced points in time and space to map out a trace of the artists walks relative to each other across Malvern.

The resulting trace is produced as a limited edition print and here as a pdf.

Conneally & Pugh continue to explore space place and time through splacist interventions.

In May 2010 Conneally and Pugh rejected psychogeography as an irrelevant term in the 21st century to describe artistic spatial, temporal and psychological urban suburban rural and all points between exploration proposing a new splacist revolution.

England soccer superstar David Beckham has crashed out of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

Beckham pulled up injured with what appears to be a ruptured Achilles tendon in AC Milan's match against Chievo at the San Siro.

If it is a ruptured Achiles tendon then his chances of playing in the World Cup for England in South Africa are virtually nil according to doctors.

Beckham's dream was to become the only English soocer player to have represented his country at 4 World Cup Championships.

Beckaham returned to the starting eleven for AC Milan against Cheivo after a good performance against old club Manchester United in the Champions League.

Pink Floyd Win Court Battle With EMI

PINK FLOYD win court battle with EMI over online sales.

Pink Floyd band members argued that their contract with EMI stipulated that their albums should not be split up and sold as individual tracks without the band's permission. They claimed that albums such as The Dark Side Of The Moon.

The Judge agreed with the band saying their contract had a clause to "preserve the artistic integrity of the albums".

EMI will have to pay the band an initial sum of £40,000 with more to follow.

This ruling will now set a precedent for other artists such as Garth Brooks and AC/DC who have also argued that their albums should only be sold as full albums and not as online individual tracks from sites such as iTunes.

Curtain Show - Birmingham Eastside Projects New Exhibition

The latest exhibition at Birmingham's Eastside Projects gallery space is Curtain Show.

It opens on the 13th March and promises to continue down the innovative path that curator Gavin Wade, here with Céline Condorelli, has led the art world of Birmingham and beyond.

"Curtain Show revolves around Lilly Reich’s Silk and Velvet Café at the Women’s Fashion Exhibition in Berlin, in 1927.

The trade fairs of the 19th century and early 20th century were places of great innovation in the fields of art and design, and a phenomenal example is Reich’s ‘Café’; but they were also inevitably sites of alliance between political power and design.

Reich’s bold exposition of gold and silver silk and black, orange and red velvet draped over chromed-steel tubular frames created a maze of spaces in which visitors and traders were enveloped in a pioneering example of a temporary environment formed by the content of the exhibition.

Starting from the installation’s complex spatial position and ambiguous political one, Curtain Show unfolds this dual role as curtains form background and foreground in a meeting of curtain works."

Lost Boy Corey Haim Dead at 38

Corey Haim the star of The Lost Boys and Lucas has died aged 38.

After a bright career as a child actor look set for big things Corey found it difficult to maintain the momentum of his early promise.

The nineties were a disaster for Haim with almost every film he made going straight to video. This led to a new millennium marked by stints in rehab as he tried to get his life and film future sorted. The sad thing is that this year was stacking up to be his best for years with 10 projects lined up. Some of these are already in the can and are reported to be some of his best work.

A spokeswoman for LAPD said Corey Haim passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at Providence St Joseph Medical Centre.

Unconfirmed sources report Haim collapsed in the bedroom of his mother's apartment and four prescription bottles were found nearby.

A post-mortem will determine the cause of death and no other details have been released as yet.

Lindsay Lohan And The White Stuff

No it's not a brand new band and it doesn't refer to white powder. It's milk! LINDSAY LOHAN has taken huge offence to an advert that was shown during the Super Bowl.

The advert showed a 'milkaholic' baby called Lindsay. Ms Lohan believes that everyone that saw it thinks its a reference to her and her reported past problems with drugs and drink. She is so wound up about it that she is suing the company concerned, E-Trade,the online stocks and shares company, for £67 million.

Wow just think of all the white stuff she could buy with that!

Lohan claims that the company have illegaly used her name 'Lindsay' maybe forgetting that there are millions of Lindsays worldwide. She's got hot lawyers:

“Many celebrities are known by one name, and E-Trade is using that knowledge to profit,” Lohan’s lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, said in a statement to the New York Post . “They’re using her name as a parody of her life. Why didn’t they use the name Susan? This is a subliminal message. Everybody’s talking about it and saying it’s Lindsay Lohan"

Most will probably think 'Grow up Lindsay'. Why on earth would an advert featuring a cry baby addicted to white stuff make anyone think of you? Skin After Skin certainly didn't - well not until you mentioned it...
Heres the E-Trade Video:

Pink Floyd Sue EMI Over Online Sales

Pink Floyd are suing the band's record label EMI over online royalty payments.

In the High Court in London the band stated that their agreement with EMI was that their songs should only be sold as song 'bundles' rather than as individual tracks.

They believe that the agreement which was written before online sales were even dreamed of still stands.

In addition to the comercial concerns the band believe that the ad hoc selling of tracks compromises the artistic integrety of albums such as Dark Side Of The Moon.

The case continues.

Lily Allen Breaks Down In Tears At Violence and Retires From Music

LILY ALLEN broke down in tears during her O2 gig when she saw two middle aged men fighting in the audience.

The star left the stage only returning after the two men had been thrown out saying: "That's the worst sort of violence. It's fucking sick and you lot should be ashamed of yourself."

Laying her political cards on the line Lily dedicated her song 'Fuck You' to Tory leader DAVID CAMERON. Cameron said last week that he has banned his daughter from listening to Lily's music as it contained words unsuitable for young people.

The gig, which also featured DIZEE RASCAL, was meant to be her last ever gig. The Fear star Allen announced that she was giving up pop to become a vintage clothes shop owner. It seems however that she can't bear the thought of giving up music at the moment and immeadiatly after the show announced plans to support US rap star Jay-Z in Hyde Park in July. She later Tweeted that the July show wil definately be her last ever performance as 'Lily Allen'.

Lily is still opening her clothes chop which will be called Lucy In Disguise at the Vintage. She will launch the venture at the Goodwood Festival in August.

Botox Barbie - Woman Who Injected Child With Botox Runs Sex Parties

A woman who bragged to the press about how she injected her 15-year old daughter with botox admits that she is an international sex party organiser.

The Daily Star reports that
'Human Barbie' Sarah Burge calls herself Madame Pink and charges £500 an hour to 'be whatever you want me to be'

Madame Pink claims to organise glamorous parties where guests, says Burge, are "Young, beautiful hipsters. Rich. Cool. The kind of people everyone wants to have sex with.”.

The truth is that Burge and her ilk are old fashioned Madames who exploit sad and lonely clients by promising them sexual happiness whilst taking their money from them. That's fine but somehow Skin After Skin feels unhappy that on the make Burge is called the Human Barbie. Barbie was made for finer things than sleazy sex parties for losers in Phuket.

Barbie has always and will always be a Park Lane girl with a degree in art from Goldsmith's tucked neatly in the pocket of her silk knickers.

As for Sindy she's a political activist living in Croydon teaching teenagers how to use The Web as weapon.

Burge could take a leaf out of old Madame Cyn's book, buy a semi in suburbia, accept luncheon vouchers and earn enough money to put her daughter through University.

Tuppaware parties I'm sure would be even more fun and help us on the road to economic recovery and cut the chance of contracting venereal disease of the moment Chlamydia at the same time.

Does anyone still get the Betaware man calling round? And no it's not a gambling addiction charity.

Mickey Rourke Sleeps With 14 Women in One Night

Actor and old soak Mickey Rourke claims to have slept with 14 women in one night on a visit to the UK.

Rourke made the claim as he dissed football love rats such as Chelsea FC players Ashley Cole and John Terry who are dominating UK soccer and celebrity headlines with stories of their infidelities.

Hollywood hell raiser Rourke tells soccer star wives and girlfriends (WAGs)that the sexual antics of Premier League Soccer stars are nothing compared to movie stars.

Rourke said "British footballers have got nothing when it comes to women"

Chelsea left back Ashley Cole is said to be devastated after wife Cheryl Cole left him after finding out about his latest sexting revelations and is currently licking his wounds both football and love in a French clinic.

Skin After Skin doesn't know who is sadder Mickey Rourke for feeling the need to brag about sleeping with 14 women or the 14 women for sleeping with Mickey Rourke.

“In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all of life presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation.” - Guy Debord

Dizzee Rascal Writes Book

That funster funkster rap star London's own Dizzee Rascal is to write his autobiography and promises to give a real insight into his upbringing and the world of London's UK Rap, Grime and Garage scenes.

The book will be a co-production between Dizzee's Dirtee Stank label and publishers Canongate.

The book is provisionally titled The Dizzee Rascal Story - come on Dizzee you can do better than that!

It will be out in hardback in October.

Bonkers!

Dizzee (real name Dylan Mills) was brought up in Bow, East London, where he was born in 1985 making him 24 by my reckoning.

Yes! Dizzee is still only 24 but seems to have been around forever. He was 17 when he won the Mercury Music Prize with his first album Boy in Da Corner.

Skin After Skin has a feeling he'll be around a long time more so maybe he'll come up with a better title for the 2nd installment of his life story out in maybe five or so more years time.

Go for it Dizzee!

Composer Plays Piano From The Grave

George Gershwin died aged 38 in 1937 but he has been heard playing his famous piano solo from Rhapsody in Blue on stage in Florida.

His ghost was summoned up by the Florida Orchestra who took to the stage without a live piano player but took with them a Yamaha Disklavier Grand Piano.

The Disklavier had been programmed up with a midi file made from a piano roll recorded by George Gershwin himself in 1927. Because the file was made from a piano roll rather than an audio recording some of the subtleties of touch and emotion that the the great American composer brought to the piece were preserved.

It was the first time since his death from a stroke that his piece Rhapsody in Blue has been heard with the piano solo more or less exactly as Gershwin himself played it.

The mix of live and digitally played music is commonplace in pop and dance music but not in the classical music hall. For some it's a step too far but the novelty of hearing the ghost of Gershwin play the piano alongside a full live orchestra is a sure crowd puller.

George Gershwin with his brother Ira Gershwin he wrote some of the best loved songs in the American song book. True music legends.

Speaking from his medical clinic in Biarritz, France, Cole told friends that he would make the offer when he talks to Cheryl next week in London.

Meanwhile Cheryl flew from Heathrow to Copenhagen, Denmark, last night looking sad but stylish in a £1,000 T-shirt. Cole is appearing on Denmark's version of the X-Factor and hopes to wow them with her performance as she prepares for a forthcoming European tour.

Bullying - a Growth Industry

Bullying is a growth industry.

It's always been around and was accepted as something that happened in playgrounds and schoolyards - a part of growing up.

Perhaps ten years ago things started to change.

Schools started to introduce anti-bullying policies and have embraced, with a little pushing from government, 'emotional health and wellbeing'.

The Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) are now well and truly built into the U K's primary school curriculum with secondary schools also implementing 'SEAL strategies'.

Countless consultancy companies have been set up to service the training needs of teachers and advisers as they strive to refine anti-bullying policies and charters.

Sub-genres emerge with courses on combating cyber, homophobic, girl-on-girl and racist bullying taking place all over the country.

Workplace bullying is now shaping up to be the next big money spinner for consultants on the back of the allegations that Prime Minister Gordon Brown is a bully - a workplace bully.

All over the country self-styled educational and management gurus are quickly amending their school anti-bullying training materials to address the not new but now out-there and in your face issue of how to tackle and eradicate the workplace bully.

Bullying is a spiteful and belittling activity that should not be tolerated at school, work or at home.

If the 'Gordon Brown's a Bully' furore opens up the workplace bullying issue to scrutiny then at least something good will come out of it.

Me? I'm sitting down to pen new materials for a workshop supporting small businesses develop Workplace Anti-Bullying Policies. I'd best be quick its a dog eat dog world!

wow and flutter

we have some excellent big museums – even the old dinosaurs feel alive these days – new build refurb and touch at often huge cost to provide wow…

maybe the need for ‘wow’ is overstated or what we believe ‘wow’ might be/should be/is

that other ‘wow’ the one that’s not wham bam thank you ma’am but that ‘wow’ those ‘wows’ that come after engaging with something maybe something quite insignificant at first sight when after giving it some attention it begins to whisper to us and then ‘wow’ …

this kind of personal wow maybe stays with us longer than the the more manufactured universal wow perhaps even a lifetime

engagements that encourage new interpretations new thinking new learning rather than big bold brassy buildings and these engagements digital or not let them be from the heart to the heart as much as mind to mind

of course a role for museums as tourist attractions and maybe tourist attractions as museums…
