We spent our first days on site harvesting existing fruit trees and foraging across campus, breaking in the apple press, cleaning out the shed with the help of LOS and getting ready for Fruit Routes launch…

Bike, Play, Invite.

At Freshers Fair we set up a stall using the beautifully crafted Fruit Routes/Eat Your Campus bike trailer and the Jeux des Pommes. We were wonderful sandwiched between the boy scouts and the boy racers underneath two loaded apple trees! Freshers were introduced to the project and took part in games and activities relating to …you guessed it..local fruit.

FRUIT ROUTES LAUNCH- 10,11,12 OCTOBER 2011

Share, Walk, Talk, Eat, Take part, Cook, Celebrate!

An interactive installation was created in The Shed. The Shed was inhabited each day by Anne-Marie Culhane and project assistant Miriam Keye. People were invited to take a seat and taste, share, eat and drink fruit and plants harvested on the campus as well as contribute their ideas to the project and share knowledge on a map of the campus fruit trees. A big hit were the fruit leathers and the elderflower, rosehip, gingko, nettle and limeflower teas.

A daily walk and talk along the first Fruit Route took place on all three days attended by a rich mix of local people of all ages, university staff and students. We identified and discussed some of the wild and edible plants growing along the first fruit route and visualized where the new planting of a wide variety of fruit, nuts and berries would be. The talk was punctuated with thoughts and open questions about the artistic, political and ecological context for the route.

Each day, apples and pears harvested on the campus were distributed to unusual locations all over campus and beyond by the Fruit Routes projects bike trailer and project team for people to eat, share, offer to others or text us about… see blog post incoming pommes

On Monday we hosted an event and discussion which focused on the relationship between artist and forager and artist as forager. This was co-hosted by Gillian Whiteley (Loughborough School of the Arts) Anne-Marie Culhane, Bob Levene (artist from Sheffield) and Paul Conneally (artist from Lougborough). We offered an open foraging task, asking participants to ‘walk without purpose’ out across the campus . The objects and thoughts they brought back with them were then used to mediate an artist led discussion. Our discussion roved across many fields including intentionality, attention, solitude, sharing, gifting, cultural foraging and personal histories.”

On Tuesday Paul Paine from Ecoworks in Nottingham gave an inspiring talk about cider and fruit wine making . We then got to taste his delicious quince wine and cider as well as sampling some locally produced homebrewed cider donated by small scale producers in Quorn. We also gave a small talk to people who were interested in making fruit seasonal syrups and cordials including elderberry, rosehip, sloe and blackberry.

Wednesday evening the launch event was rounded up by Flora + Fauna Feast. Each person was invited to come along representing another member of the biotic community who would be part of the Fruit Routes. The food and drink was locally sourced and foraged. The event was attended by a woodlouse, a bumble bee, mycorrhizal fungi, two ladybirds, a herring !, a lion ?, a fly, a pipistrelle bat and the promise of spring. The evening was a rich weave of shared stories, songs, dance, sounds and objects representing and celebrating some of the many other living creatures who will inhabit the Fruit Routes with us.

Video installation by artist Paul Conneally first shown during Liverpool Biennial 2006 as part of the RedSkyAtNight show. Explores issues of remembrance through images of bee's leaving a poppy. Made in Windmill Community Garden Nottingham UK on UK Veterans Day 2006 - 90 Years on from the Somme.

On a personal level the piece brings memories of the artist's two grandads together - Grandad Peace who ran away underage to the great war and Grandad Conneally who was blown up on the beaches the day after D-Day but survived. The song 'Roses of Picardi' was recorded during the First World War by John McCormac - a singer that was also Grandad Conneally's favourite singer of Won't You come Home Again Kathleen.

The Blind Fiddler - David Wilkie 1806

Cultural Forager for Transform Snibston artist, Paul Conneally, discovered that The Blind Fiddler was painted in the kitchen of Coleorton Hall Farm in 1806 - the same farm that the great poet William Wordsworth lived in with his familly. The picture was commissioned by Sir George Beaumont and given by him to the nation. It now forms part of the TATE collection.

The picture depicts a family gathered together being entertained by an itinerant musician - the Blind Fiddler. Conneally began to ask questions about what families do for home entertainment together. From January 2012 through Spring Conneally will curate an exhibition The Blind Fiddler - Home Entertainment 1806 to 2013 exploring now how home entertainment indulged in as a family has changed through the years since 1806.

The exhibition will draw on artefacts, selected by Conneally, already held in Leicestershire Mueum and Galleries collections and new works by Conneally, artists asked by him to make their own interpretations of The Blind Fiddler theme, and works created with Conneally by and with communities local to where the picture was originally painted.

We encourage all university lecturers, school teachers, business people and others to consign the PowerPoint presentation as most commonly currently used to the trash bin.

The only times these p(e)rveyors of usually seconhand thought should use PowerPoint presentations are when they use a previously unseen randomly downloaded PowerPoint slide show to illustrate whatever it is that they wish to pontificate on to their captive audience.

Students and other audience members should boo any speaker using a PowerPoint made by the speaker themselves or one that though not made by the speaker has been obviously rehearsed to by the speaker before hand.

The use of dance, music, boxing or any other performative act is actively encouraged in place of PowerPoint presentations.

A Circle of Fire is a 12 verse Junicho form renga written during the Grow Sheffield Renga Ramble.as part of Sheffield's festival of reading and writing 'Off the Shelf' 2007.

A Circle of Fire was conceived and led by poet / artists Anne - Marie Culhane (host poet) and Paul Conneally (master poet).

A Circle of Fire takes the process of renga (collaborative linked Japanese form) from where it is usually performed in a fixed space to movement through a space (stanzas 1- 6) from Weston Park Museum through Crookes to Sheffield's urban edge on Crookes Quarry Allotments where the last 6 verse are written.

All these works were made during workshop with haiku poet and artist paul conneally as part of cotham school’s excellence in cities gifted and talented programme. The workshops were organised by Head of Art Sue Watson – the work in part examines the fragmentary nature of life - the whole being so much more than the parts.

During the day the students were introduced to the haiku of great Japanese haiku masters like Basho and Issa and some of the modern western haiku greats such as William J Higginson and marlene mountain.

The students also studied Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) and went on a ‘ginko’ – a haiku walk – to collect fragments in the form of both words and physical objects that they then used to make their haiga (pictures with haiku). These haiga existed physically for perhaps no more than twenty minutes – but here they are in digital form for you to enjoy

Shoppers browsing the shelves in chain-stores across the Midlands have been getting more than they bargained for, as they discover items left by an artist who says he is “shopputting” – the opposite of shoplifting.

Loughborough-based Paul Conneally has been placing clothes, shoes and other goods with labels attached to them informing the customer that they aren’t for sale, but can simply be taken.

He has been stopped by security four times and police have been called twice during the latest stage of his project, which has taken him to Topshop stores across the region. But after explaining that it is not against the law to place goods in a shop without permission, the artist has been let off each time.

Writing on his Blog (http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking/projects/single/581091) on the Artists Newsletter website, Conneally explained that shopputting is "another word for giving".

He also gave an example of a happy customer in Derby: "One teenager stopped as she took a pair of Shopputted labelled tracky bottoms out of the shop - she appeared to show the security man the label and he chatted on his radio and sent her on her way - both were laughing - that's good - hope they fit her."

Conneally's Topshop project will continue until the end of November 2009.

"It's 1980 and even punk's nihilism is looking over optimistic. In the Oscar Wilde Rooms, a windowless cell in an Oxford College, Dum Dum Dum take the stage. Guitarist in balaclava, drummer with face painted half-white, half-black and a lead singer armed only with a strobe light, they play to tapes but with malevolent energy. The audience -- half skinheads from town, half rugby players who've wandered in from the bar -- begin to fight as the rugger-buggers object to having their feet pogoed on. The tape breaks down, and the singer starts pulling the skinheads onto the stage to sing "No Fun". But it's futile. On the mixing desk is a man whose main claim to fame is to have dropped acid at the South Pole. He now pushes everything through the roof and the sound itself becomes a rolling maul of feedback and echo. Serenading the mayhem in free-form, the singer strobes the crowd, catching figures in frozen postures of conflict and delight. The destruction erupts into the night. Good gig."

The gig also featured on BBC Radio 4's 'Quote Unquote' programme with the presenter announcing in standard English A skinhead when asked why he spat in the face of the Dean of Baliol College when leaving a show by punk band Dum Dum Dum said: "Just my way of saying goodnight and thanks for a nice evening"

"LifeCycle is a multi-screen audio-visual installation that explores the themes of change and transformation as they are understood and experienced by a range of people who live and work in the Coalville area. It was launched at the historic Century Theatre within Snibston Discovery Museum, Coalville, on 14th May, 2011. It was commissioned as part of the Transform project, a major arts program developed to transform how Snibston can be understood and interpreted.

LifeCycle reflects an ongoing interest in interpreting and re-articulating everyday life using film, audio and installation. This piece is based upon my journeys through Coalville, recording conversations with the wide range of people I met and capturing visual impressions of people and place. It is based upon notions of transformation and change - I asked the people I met to share with me their thoughts on the things and values we need to recognise; what we should treasure and preserve; what needs to come to an end and be let go of; what can we put at the heart of our culture and our communities.

The video above is a screen-based version of the film used for the installation.

The installation consists of 5 back-projection screens, 5 data projectors, surround-sound system, and is controlled by 3 Mac-mini computers.

The LifeCycle commission was curated by Maurice Maguire and Carolyn Abel at part of the Transform project. Jointly commissioned artists were: Brendan Jackson, Paul Conneally, and Joanne Dacombe.

The James Connection was coordinated by paul conneally and marlene mountain for the marlene mountain section of the World Haiku Review which conneally was editor of at the time.

The mountain sonnet is a form developed by paul conneally with marlene mountain which uses mountain's one line haiku link form as a usually themed 14 line poem made up of 14 one line linked haiku.

Conneally asserts that marlene mountain is one of the most talented and influential haiku poets of the late 20th and early 21st century continually challenging readers to confront what haiku / haikai was is and might be.

Interview with Jemma Bagley and Brenda Seaton about The Sound of Water Haiku Hike led by poet / artist Paul Conneally and coordinated by Jemma Bagley of Charnwood Arts.

Conneally asks Jemma and Brenda, rather than himself, to appear on the radio and talk about the work. This mediation between artist and the work and the wider public through community and media extends the scope of the piece inviting and allowing further interpretation and insights and into the work than the artist could perhaps imagine.

The work led to a publication 'The Sound of Water' and is an example of how psychogeography / splacist approaches can work to explore areas and planning schemes. Here a Section 106 planning order where the builders are required to pay for public art is subverted from the nowm when Conneally and Bagley use the builder's money to work with a group that are against the building development.

Some of the poems from the action group are then incorporated into the estate as metal haiku benches made by sculptor Richard Thornton.

The work was supported by Charnwood Borough Council.

Freedom For A Song comes from INDIFFERENT, a series of prints, images and texts, by artist, poet and cultural forager Paul Conneally. INDIFFERENT emerges from cultural forages in and around Snibston Discovery Park and the villages that surround it. The forages form part of the process underpinning Spoil Heap Harvest a piece commissioned by Snibston as part of TRANSFORM.

INDIFFERENT sees Conneally juxtaposing the poetry of the playwright and poet Francis Beaumont, who was born in Thringston, North West Leicestershire, with not frottages but presages of plant and other materials, made on a cultural forage through the Snibston Colliery spoil heap, now a country park. The artist invites the viewer to seek for pictures within the presaged image in the same way that a psychologist might ask a patient to look for images in the famous Rorschach or Ink Blot Test. What can you see? You can report back to the artist what you feel the image to be by email: little.onion@ntlworld.com or by commenting on this page using the comment form.

Throughout Spoil Heap Harvest Conneally will make psychogeographic cultural forages through the wider footprint of the former Snibston colliery which is in Coalville, North West Leicestershire. The forages and interventions will be mediated by the poetry of William Wordsworth, Francis Beaumont and the paintings of John Constable. All three of these cultural giants deeply connected with the area in ways for the most part unknown by local and wider communities.

Wordsworth lived in the area, with his whole family, for a whole year and it was at Coleorton that he first read his completed masterpiece, The Prelude, to Coleridge. Constable, Sir Walter Scott and many other famous artists and writers clamoured to North West Leicestershire to stay with George Beaumont at his home Coleorton Hall, just down the road from Snibston. George Beaumont himself was the lead benefactor for the setting up the National Gallery in London.

Paul Conneally is cultural forager in residence at Snibston Discovery Museum as part of TRANSFORM SNIBSTON.

DONG HA HAIKU

(Dong Ha was one of the poorest villages in South Vietnam in the province of Quang Tri, just a few miles south of the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) near the Cua Viet River where I was stationed in the Marines with a rifle company from 2/29/68–4/3/69.)

Concertina wire is a type of coiled barbed wire used to make it more difficult for the enemy to sneak across the lines.

rust colored water
not even enough
to bathe with

The scarcity of water was a permanent situation. Only commissioned officers were permitted to use water to bathe. The rest of us either had to go months on end without bathing or take our chances bathing in the shallow river where enemy snipers were often waiting. I came down with amoebic dysentery twice and was hospitalized on both occasions due to having to drink the filthy water. Medicinal plants have helped me a lot over the years, but I still suffer from colitis to this day.

Filling sand bags under a hot sun in high humidity was a frequent activity. They were used mainly to build new bunkers or fortify old ones. They were also used to hold down the tin roofs of Quonset huts during the monsoons.

Many of the mosquitoes carried malaria and other nasty tropical diseases.

The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) separated North Vietnam from South Vietnam. The area was an eerie sight like the cratered surface of the moon. All vegetation had been destroyed by the bombing and use of chemical defoliants.

Tet is the month of the Vietnamese New Year and Buddhist religious celebrations and observances according to the old agrarian lunar calendar. A time of strength and strong beliefs. The Viet Cong launched their bloodiest attacks and offensives during this time. I had the misfortune of having to experience two Tets. It also marks the short but intense rainy season and monsoons.

Boom-boom was the word they used for prostitute. They also offered bags of opium and marijuana. Absolutely nothing else except for bottles of Coke. It seems these are the three things you can find just about anywhere you go in the world even in places of extreme poverty where food and water are not available.

MARINE BOOT CAMP HAIKU

     Taking the oath;
     "I promise to serve GOD
     and my country."

     standing on a set
     of yellow painted footprints
     there’s no turning back

These footprints were to indicate where the new draftees and recruits had to stand in line while
waiting to get our heads shaved.

     our hair is gone
     in a matter of minutes
     we look like pathetic monks

     on a bus to the barracks
     no one is allowed to speak
     a single word

     second week of training
     the damn D.I. nicknames me
     "Scarecrow!"

D.I. stands for Drill Instructor.

     an exhausting day
     the man beaten up badly
     stifles sobs after taps

Taps refers to the time of rest, after "lights out!" Sometimes a sad bugle is played.

     lights on at 4 a.m.
     the last man out of bed
     gets a boot in the butt

     chow hall
     four minutes
     for breakfast

A chow hall is a military cafeteria.

     120 men
     take a piss in 42 seconds
     "two seconds too slow ladies!"

The parade grounds is the place where military marches and inspections are held.

Pugil sticks are used in training men to fight with a bayonet attached to the front end of a rifle in

Maggie’s drawers is the name of the flag that is waved when the marksman completely
misses the target.

The M-14 is a military rifle. The M-16 was mostly used in Vietnam, but a few soldiers
preferred the heavier, but more accurate M-14.

     Final Inspection:
     the fly on my nose refuses
     to leave me alone

     Graduation Day:
     for the very first time the D.I.
     calls us Marines

The work is at at Snibston Discovery Museum - a former colliery near Coalville.

Three Jars Of Coal Dust Jelly comes out of Conneally's commission 'Spoil Heap Harvest' as cultural forager for Transform Snibston funded by the Arts Council and Leicestershire Museums Service.

The jars are in a specially constructed museum cabinet. During the Revealing Snibston Exhibition at Snibston Conneally also installed ART JAM where identical jars of Coal Dust Jelly were for sale. The left hand side of the counter jars were labelled ART and the right hand jars were labelled JAM. The only difference was the price. The jars from the ART side cost a shed load more than the jars from the Jam side.

Snibston has many 'real' objects on display.

Do 'real' objects remain the same when placed in a museum or gallery? Do 'unreal' objects become 'real' when placed in a museum alongside 'real' ones?

Channelling Wordsworth

Currently 'cultural forager' with Transform Snibston poet artist Paul Conneally is once again channelling William Wordsworth to mediate between himself, community and place in North West Leicestershire. A major part of his ongoing work 'Spoil Heap Harvest' is the making of the Snibston Wordsworth Trail.

William Wordsworth and his family lived at Coleorton Hall Farm for nearly a year between 1806 and 1807. The trail will start at Snibston and take in many of the places associated with Wordsworth and his friends and family including Coleridge, Sir George Beaumont and Dorothy Wordsworth.

Conneally uses historical poetic and artistic material foraged from the area to make links between the past, now and what might be. On the 14th of May 2011 another of the 4 artists currently working with Transform Snibston, Geof Broadway, will be installing a digital artwork illumination in the Century Theatre on the main Snibston site. Conneally along with Brendan Jackson and Jo Dacombe will also be exhibiting tasters of their own work at the event.

no time for streams
or those that look at hills
you learn to love
passing your early youth
amid the smoke of cities

lofty firs
taller than the old steeple

the vicar's collar
a house big enough
for ten rough sleepers
